Build an emergency career kit

There's a lot of negativity out there about the job market, and I get it, because it's a tough time. I've seen clients in different industries lose their jobs, particularly within the federal government, contracting, and international development communities.

Yet, we are also seeing clients land jobs. Yes, it's a tougher job market but there are still many jobs out there.

People say it's taking longer to land a job. Guess what? It's not much different than 2024, when it was taking 6+ months for people to land a job.

When you see on LinkedIn that a job had 1,000 applicants, this refers to how many people clicked on the job announcement, NOT how many people submitted applications! It's also important to remember that a lot of people are shooting off applications to all kinds of jobs in the hopes something sticks, even if they don't meet any of the qualifications! Those people will be disqualified. The pool you're competing against is smaller than you think.

I say this a lot, but it bears repeating. A smarter job searcher spends more time reaching out to talk to people than simply submitting applications online.

No matter how you're feeling about the job market, it's important to be ready because one thing is certain: the future is uncertain. These are challenging times. It pays to be prepared for your applications and outreach.
