What's your job search strategy?

  • There's the 8-hour a day sit in front of the computer and shoot off application after application strategy.

  • There's the spend several hours applying and then several hours connecting or reconnecting with people in your network or outside it strategy.

  • There's the spend a few hours in the morning applying or connecting with people and then take a few hours to do something for you strategy.

There are many, many different ways to job search and there isn't a one-size-fits all approach. However, there are adjustments you can make to help you search smarter, not harder. What steps should you take?

Determine target companies.
Write down companies you admire (near or far - don't restrict yourself to your geography). Think about companies you admire for their leadership, initiatives, mission, or customer service. It could be companies you've heard about from a "best companies to work for" list or from a friend or former colleague who loved working somewhere.

Take a good look at your list. You may notice some common characteristics. Are the majority of them large companies or small companies? Startups or established? Examining it closely will give you some hints as to what you are seeking. In addition, you can search in Google or ChatGPT for competitors to help you expand your list of companies to research.
