Navigating the hot mess

There's no doubt about it. The job market is a hot mess right now.
People are staying in jobs they hate because less positions are available (this is being dubbed "job hugging"). Companies and organizations are laying people off because of the impact of tariffs or lost funding.
We’re reminded of the pandemic, even though these are different times. At that time people were asking us a lot of questions that echo job seekers' fears today. For example:
If someone has a reasonably stable job right now, is there a danger in changing companies during a time of uncertainty?
Does the “first in - first out" practice still apply broadly for layoffs?
What about jobs that are suddenly "on hold," or hiring has been frozen? Yes, follow up, stay in contact, but is there anything I should be thinking of?
Here's my two cents. There's always a danger in changing companies, always. If the past five years have taught us anything, it's that life is uncertain. It's up to you and your circumstances as to how much risk you're willing to undertake.
